Vandana Baweja

School of Architecture
2017 Rothman Faculty Summer Fellow

Dr. Baweja received a Rothman Faculty Summer Fellowship for her project titled “Tropical Architecture in Australia,” which is part of a broader book project on “Tropical Architecture in Florida.”

In combination with a fellowship from the University of Queensland the Rothman Faculty Summer Fellowship enabled Dr. Baweja to travel to Australia to do research at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation [CSIRO] library in Canberra, University of Queensland and University of Melbourne.

At the CSIRO library in Canberra, I found numerous reports about research on climatic design prepared by the Building Research Station. At the University of Queensland, she found an unexpected treasure trove of an archive on Douglas H. K. Lee. This helped transform her thinking about the Australian contribution to the field of tropical architecture and its circulation along global networks.
