Distributive Justice and Autonomous Vehicles – Nick Evans

February 21, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

Research into the ethics of autonomous vehicles focuses, almost exclusively, on whether decisions by individual cars conform to, reflect, or promote certain values. Less discussed is whether, or how, autonomous vehicles ought to be developed and deployed from the perspective of distributive justice. Evans argues that autonomous vehicles—as an object of moral concern and as a component in transportation systems—ought to be considered in terms of distributive justice.

Nicholas Evans is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.  He is co-editor of Cybersecurity: Mapping the Ethical Terrain (2014).
