International Center Internal Grants

The Global Fellows Program

The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) is proud to offer a fellowship program to assist faculty in developing or advancing an international research agenda. The Global Fellows Program provides support for faculty with:

  • One-on-one consultations with the Office for Global Research Engagement (OGRE) staff for support with international proposal development. OGRE staff will provide assistance to identify funding opportunities, prepare budgets and monitoring and evaluation plans, prepare applications for relevant research approvals (e.g. IRB), and construct proposals prior to submission to the Office of Research
  • Seed funding up to $4,000 to cover expenses for an international trip to develop the Fellow’s research project and/or establish a network or partnership with foreign counterparts.
  • Honoria of $1,000 for a Faculty Mentor within the same field of study who can provide expert guidance and feedback on the content of the Fellow’s international project.
  • Access to a series of workshops hosted by OGRE on proposal preparation, UF international resources, finding international funding opportunities and developing international collaborations.
  • Opportunities for networking and building partnerships with UF colleagues, international collaborators and funding agency representatives.

The goals of the Global Fellows Program are to increase the number of faculty who participate regularly in global activities, promote faculty engagement in international research and build a cohort of UF scholars who will provide campus leadership in international activities. Additionally, the program is designed to elevate the status of UF’s internationalization mission and build strong institutional relationships for global engagement.

Information session are held each year to discuss this opporunity.

Eligibility for Application

Regular UF faculty members in all ranks with a research assignment are eligible to apply for the Global Fellows Program. Applications from faculty within the first 10 years of their academic career and those with strong international research interests will receive priority in the selection process. Our intent is to support junior faculty who wish to develop an international research program; faculty may be at the assistant or associate levels.

Global Fellows Expectations

The following activities are part of the expectations for each of the selected Global Fellows:

  • Develop an International Research Project: During the course of the fellowship year, each Fellow will be responsible for developing an international research project. The Fellow will be expected to submit an external grant proposal on the proposed international research project to a funding agency.
  • Meet with a Faculty Mentor: Each Fellow will identify a faculty mentor who can review their international project and provide feedback on the content and academic merit of the proposal. Applications that identify a mentor will receive higher priority.
  • Attend the Global Workshop Series: Each Fellow will be expected to attend a series of workshops hosted by OGRE during the spring semester on topics such as finding international funding opportunities, proposal and budget preparation, international IRB and export controls, project monitoring and evaluation and UF global resources. Fellows must attend five of the six workshops.
  • Participate in the Faculty Symposium on International Research: All Fellows are expected to attend a one-day meeting at the end of the spring semester which will include presentations by representatives of federal and international funding agencies, NGO and private-sector partners and UF International Educator award winners.
  • Complete an International Research Trip: Each Fellow will receive funding of up to $4,000 to complete an international research trip during Summer or Fall.

The timeline for the Global Fellows Program is January – December.

By applying for the Global Fellows Program, each of the applicants agrees to fulfill these expectations.

Application procedures and deadlines

The application is due in October. Please email your application by the deadline.

Selection Criteria for Global Fellows

A maximum of 10 Global Fellows will be selected using the following criteria:

  • Career alignment: Evidence that the applicant has the potential to develop a strong global research portfolio. Applicants within the first 10 years of their academic career will receive priority for selection.
  • Commitment: Evidence of the applicant’s willingness to commit the time needed to benefit from the Global Fellowship Program and evidence of scholarly promise that would permit such a time commitment. The applicant’s Chair/School Director/Department Head or Dean must also affirm their commitment in the required letter of support.
  • Endorsement: Evidence of enthusiastic endorsement from appropriate department, school, or college-level administrators.
  • Relevance: Evidence that the applicant’s international interests are consistent with the goals of the Global Fellows Program to promote the pursuit of excellence in international research at UF and align with the mission/goals of his/her academic unit.

Role of the Faculty Mentor

Applicants should identify a Faculty Mentor, who is experienced in international research, to help guide the development of their global research project. Mentors will usually come from the Fellows home department or college, but faculty from other institutions and other UF colleges/departments can also be selected in order to ensure the most effective mentor-mentee pairing. Mentors are expected to serve as a sounding board for the Fellow on the design of their international research project, providing guidance and feedback on the content and academic merit of the proposal. Mentors are invited to attend the International Education Week reception on November 14, 2016, during which the Global Fellows will be introduced. They are also are welcome to attend any and all workshops and seminars and the campus convening.

Global Fellows Program Workshops Series

Each year OGRE holds a workshop series for this program. There is no charge for attending. Space is limited to 25 faculty. RSVP to reserve a space.
