The Lost Communities of Florida Exhibition Opening Event
January 25, 2022 @ 6:00 pm
Josh Goodman holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in History from Florida State University and a Ph.D. in History from Tulane University. At the State Archives, Josh manages the process of digitizing historical records for the award-winning Florida Memory program, as well as promoting the use of the Archives’ collections through community outreach around the state. The exhibition Lost Communities of Florida looks back at some of the once thriving Florida communities that have now faded or disappeared. It examines the broad social, economic, and political trends, as well as natural disasters and new technologies that contributed to their rise and fall.
The exhibition is drawn mostly from the Libraries’ P.K. Yonge Library of Florida History, Special and Area Studies Collections, and includes contemporary and historical photographs, brochures, and documents representing several communities throughout the state. Represented in the exhibit are the communities and people of Hastings, Newnansville, Pilgrimage Plantation, Yamato, Brewster, Santos, Goldsboro, Rosewood and Chosen, among others. Lost Communities of Florida is curated by Dr. Bridget Bihm-Manuel and Hank Young. The physical exhibit is on view in the Smathers Library Gallery January 18 – April 8, 2022. A complementary online exhibit will launch later this spring.
Register here. The Smathers Library Gallery is located on the second floor of the Smathers Library on the University of Florida campus. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., unless otherwise specified and with occasional exceptions for maintenance. All exhibitions are open to the public and free of charge.
