The Archaeology of Maroon Communities in Colonial Florida – Liz Ibarrola

December 12, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Archaeology On Tap presents: Liz Ibarrola, M.A.
Ph.D. candidate, Department of Anthropology, Historical Archaeology, University of Florida.

During the colonial era, Spanish Florida built a reputation as a refuge for people escaping slavery in the Carolinas and Georgia. These African and African-descendant people set a vital precedent in Spanish asylum policy and dramatically shaped Florida’s history and the history of the Southern United States – so why don’t we know their story? In her talk, Liz will discuss the history of self-liberated people in Florida, the many archaeological projects which have investigated their lives, and discuss how that archaeology can help us to better understand the ways that people deal with social inequality and upheaval both in the past and in the world today.

Sponsored by SouthArc, Inc and the Florida Public Archaeology Network.
