The 41st Annual Ancient Philosophy Workshop

February 23, 2018

The Ancient Philosophy Workshop is an annual conference that brings together specialists in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy from around the country and the world. There will be roughly eight talks, each followed by discussion, over the event’s two days, plus a talk by the Keynote Speaker at the end of the first day. A congenial atmosphere promotes both critical debate and informal discussion. The Workshop was first held at University of Texas at Austin in 1978 and continues to take place there regularly, but over the years the practice has developed of other universities hosting the event. Since 2005, when not held at UT-Austin, the Workshop has been hosted by Emory University (2006), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (2009), Washington University in St. Louis (2011), the University of Pennsylvania (2014), and Rice University (2016).

The Keynote Speaker for the Workshop is Dr. Katja Vogt, Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University. A specialist in ancient philosophy, ethics, and normative epistemology, Prof. Vogt is interested in questions that figure both in ancient and contemporary discussions: What are values? What kind of values are knowledge and truth? What does it mean to want one’s life to go well? Her most recent book is Desiring the Good: Ancient Proposals and Contemporary Theory (Oxford, 2017).

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place Friday, 23 February – Saturday, 24 February, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, in the Friends of Music Room (University Auditorium).
This workshop is sponsored by the UF Department of Philosophy in coordination with the UF Department of Classics, with support from the UF Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere (Rothman Endowment).
