Pepón Osorio Visiting Artist Lecture
October 17, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Pepón Osorio uses different objects, installations and video to portray political and social issues affecting Latino communities. He is influenced by his experience as a social worker in The Bronx, creating works that evolve from an interaction with the neighborhoods and people. An example is Tina’s House, a project created in collaboration with a family recovering from a devastating fire. The house—a tabletop-size art piece—tells the story of the night of the fire and those affected, and is traveling the country in a series of Home Visits: a home visit invites a new family to live with the artwork for a period of at least one week.
Osorio studied at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Lehman College, and Columbia University. He is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a Bessie Award. His work is held by the Walker Arts Center, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, El Museo del Barrio, el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, and by the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art.
He shows at Ronald Feldman Gallery and teaches at Tyler School of Art.
This event is free and open to the public.
The Visiting Artist Lecture Series about Art, Race and Social Justice is sponsored by the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere with support from the Rothman Endowment, and The Marston Visiting Artists Fund.
