Pan-Caribbean Voices: Connecting People and Sharing Stories Relating to the Panama Canal

Pan Caribbean Sankofa and the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries cordially invite you to attend an online community event that examines the history and lives of the Pan-Caribbean people who lived and worked in the República de Panamá and the former Canal Zone. The event focuses on an Oral History Project underway to record interviews narrated by people of West Indian descent, and will feature a panel discussion on the importance of preserving and sharing personal stories.

Pan Caribbean Sankofa, Inc., and the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries are pleased to announce an online event that examines the history and lives of the Pan-Caribbean people who lived and worked in the República de Panamá and the former Canal Zone. The event will feature a panel of speakers who are participating in an oral history project being conducted to record and preserve interviews narrated by people of West Indian descent. The program also will include an exhibit of selected historical photos from the Panama Canal Museum Collection at the University of Florida. In addition to raising awareness about the lives and roles of Pan-Caribbean people in relation to the Panama Canal, the event will address the importance of identity, community, religion, language, and culture in the Caribbean diaspora.

The event is sponsored by the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere with support from the Rothman Endowment. More information about the program is forthcoming, along with registration information!

Voces Pancaribeñas: Conectando personas y compartiendo historias relacionadas al Canal de Panama

La Corporación Pan-Caribe Sankofa y las Bibliotecas George A. Smathers de la Universidad de Florida se complacen en anunciar un evento virtual que examinará la historia y las vidas de los Pancaribeños que vivieron y trabajaron en la República de Panamá y la antigua Zona del Canal. El evento contará con un panel de presentadores que participan en un proyecto de historia oral que se está llevando a cabo con el propósito de grabar y preservar entrevistas narradas por descendientes afroantillanos. El programa también incluirá una exhibición de fotografías históricas de la Colección del Museo del Canal de Panamá de la Universidad de Florida.

Además de crear conciencia sobre la vida y los roles de los Pancaribeños asociados a la Zona del Canal de Panamá, el evento abordará la importancia de la identidad, la comunidad, la religión, el idioma y la cultura en la diáspora caribeña.
