Since its foundingin 1919, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has been a bulwark of leadership, support, and national and international representation for the humanities and humanistic social sciences. They currently offer a suite of funding programs including the prestigious Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship, ACLS Fellowships for university and independent scholars, the Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowships for Recently Tenured Scholars, and the ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowships. The ACLS also offers a variety of specific funding programs for scholars of Art History, Africa, Buddhist Studies, and Asian Studies. To support new initiatives in the digital and public humanities, the ACLS offers ACLS Digital Extension Grants to amplify the reach of digital humanities projects, and the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows Program to give recent PhDs experience working in organizations beyond academia.

At this workshop, Dr. Matthew Goldfeder will offer an overview of the diverse ACLS funding opportunities for faculty and graduate students and offer guidance to potential applicants. UF faculty who have won ACLS grants and fellowships, as well as reviewed in ACLS funding competitions, will be on hand to speak about their experiences as recipients of these prestigious awards as well as of the reviewing process. There will be ample time for Q&A about the funding programs and the application process.

Finally, this workshop will be a unique opportunity for the wider discussion of funding needs and opportunities in the humanities. As with many humanities organizations, the ACLS constantly seeks to understand better the direction of research and scholarship in different humanities fields and how funding institutions can support contemporary and future research directions. Please join us for a wide-ranging discussion of your research interests, and what you see on the horizon of the humanities, higher education, and the public sphere.

Who should attend? UF faculty, graduate students (and advanced undergraduate students interested in research), and independent scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences (e.g., social and cultural anthropology, sociology, political theory, international relations, and other subjects concerned with questions of value). International students (students without U.S. Citizenship) are also welcome to attend.

Matthew Goldfeder is director of fellowship programs at the American Council of Learned Societies, helping to maintain a growing portfolio of annual fellowship and grant programs. Before joining ACLS in 2012, Dr. Goldfeder worked in various non-profit and for-profit environments, including with Human Rights Watch. Dr. Goldfeder earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Virginia.
