Limits to Decolonization: Indigeneity, Territory, and Hydrocarbon Politics in the Bolivian Chaco

April 10, 2019 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Free

A Book Talk With Dr. Penelope Anthias

The talk will describe how racialized inequalities and hydrocarbon interests have conjoined to place enduring obstacles on indigenous struggles for territory. Anthias will also explore the surprising ways in which Guaraní leaders are rethinking their visions of territorial autonomy in the context of these limits – including through participation in struggles over gas rents. Rather than offering a redemptive narrative of indigenous resistance or state-led emancipation, she suggests that decolonial and leftist scholarship should confront these (post)colonial and capitalist constraints on indigenous futures, and the ways in which our own resource practices contribute towards (re)producing them.

This event is part of the MALAS Indigenous Studies Specialization Speaker Series.
