Islam, Media, & Popular Culture in Africa & Elsewhere

Part of the Islam in Africa in Global Context project funded through the Henry Luce Foundation.

The workshop begins on Thurs., October 8th at 11:30 am EDT with a presentation by Yousuf Saeed, an independent filmmaker, researcher, and designer based in New Delhi, about Islamic popular arts in South Asia in the early 20th century. A roundtable discussion with Ali Mian (UF) and Shobana Shankar (Stony Brook U) will follow.

Friday, October 9th from 10 am EDT,  will have a series of papers by Laura Fair (Michigan State), Hassan Ndzovu (Moi U), Frédérick Madore (ZMO Berlin), Lassane Ouédraogo (Ohio U), and Ali Mian (UF). It ends with a lecture in the UF Center for African Studies Center’s baraza series by Abdalla Uba Adamu (Bayero University, Kano) entitled “‘Don’t Translate M**r in the Vernacular’: Rap, Hip-Hop and Islamicate Public Culture in Northern Nigeria” at 3:30 pm EDT.
