Humanities Happy Hour (Chapters 7 and 8)

April 13, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join UF’s Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere for “Humanities Happy Hour.” Collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of faculty, grads, and community members for a discussion of Ian Hacking’s The Social Construction of What? in a relaxed atmosphere over the course of spring semester 2023.

Have you ever wanted to discuss scholarship in its academic and popular contexts? Have you yearned for an intellectual community across the humanities, social sciences, and the natural sciences? If so, the Humanities Happy Hour might be for you.

Our (tentative) reading schedule for the semester is:

  • February 2: Preface, Chapters 1 and 2.
  • March 2: Chapters 3 and 4.
  • March 30: Chapters 5 and 6.
  • April 13: Chapters 7 and 8.

Why Ian Hacking?

  • Read more about the Canadian philosopher’s important work in his citation as a recipient of the renowned Holberg Prize, awarded annually to scholars who make outstanding contributions to the humanities, social sciences, law, or theology;
  • Take a look at fellow-philosopher Richard Rorty’s assessment of Social Construction in the shadow of the acrimonious science wars of the 1990s;
  • And delve into Hacking’s own summary of the project in his London Review of Books essay, “Taking Bad Arguments Seriously”.

This event is free and open to the public. Contact Dr. Sara Agnelli to participate, access the text, or with any other questions you may have.
