Catastrophe and Archaeology: Some Lessons from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru – Augusto Oyuela-Caycedo
November 20, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
FreeAugusto Oyuela-Caycedo is Associate Professor Anthropology at the University of Florida.
His presentation focuses on how some catastrophic events impact human societies. Be they volcanic, flooding, or earthquakes, these occurrences transform the surrounding ecological systems to an extent that they may never recover to a previous state. The effected areas sometimes require hundreds of years before use is possible by a new population with new forms of interaction with the environment. The archaeological cases presented demonstrate that there is never a return to previous stage, but that peoples and environments are in continue process of becoming something new. This presentation will be approached from the perspective of the longue durée of things to come in the human history.
