This symposium will examine the intricate dynamics, multifaceted entanglements, and ambivalences in Christian-Muslim encounters in Africa. Internal transformations within Christianity and Islam have been occurring alongside changing patterns of interactions between Christians and Muslims. Focusing on “religious encounters” and putting Christianity and Islam in Africa within the same analytical frame, the symposium will shed light on the complex entanglements, mutual interactions, and influences of Christianity and Islam. The presenters will focus on empirical cases of changing patterns of Christian-Muslim encounters, including conversion, borrowing, adaptation, inclusion, exclusion, cooperation, and competition in various settings in Africa.
