Lucy S. Dawidowicz’s The War Against the Jews was the standard book on the Holocaust in the 1970s for many American Jews. Less known is the degree to which Dawidowicz’s background in Yiddish culture and her Holocaust scholarship influenced her move from liberalism to neo-conservatism within the milieu of New York Jewish intellectuals in the 1970s and 80s.
