Thursday, February 14, 2019, 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm Public Lecture Judaica Suite, Library East (2nd floor) “The Rise and Fall of Salonica, the ‘Jerusalem of the Balkans'” The Mediterranean port city of Salonica (Thessaloniki) was once home to the largest Sephardic Jewish community in the world. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the city’s incorporation into Greece in 1912 provoked a major upheaval for Salonica’s Jews. This lecture tells the story through the voices of Salonican Jews as they forged a new place for themselves in Greek society prior to the Holocaust. Devin E. Naar is the Isaac Alhadeff Professor of Sephardic Studies and Associate Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of Washington. A former Fulbright scholar, he directs the Sephardic Studies Digital Collection, the largest repository of digital Ladino texts in the world. His book, Between the Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece, won a National Jewish Book Award and the grand prize from the Modern Greek Studies Association. |
