Research in Progress: “Manifest Destiny at Sea: Steam Infrastructure and American Power, 1847-1857”
November 1, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
FreeYou are invited for a Research in Progress talk in the History of Capitalism in the History Conference Room (005 Keene-Flint Hall):
“Manifest Destiny at Sea: Steam Infrastructure and American Power, 1847-1857”
Dr. Alicia Maggard, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport
This presentation will examine the ways in which 19th century steamships created regular transportation and communication networks between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. As California entered the United States in 1850, the need for an efficient infrastructure pushed American technological, organizational, and diplomatic development; in doing so steam power transformed the geopolitics of the Pacific.
For a copy of Dr. Maggard’s paper, contact spadams@ufl.edu. Reading the pre-circulated essay is not required, but it is recommended in order to facilitate discussion. There will be a catered lunch, so please RSVP in advance.
For any questions, please contact Sean Adams at spadams@ufl.edu.
This event is sponsored by the Hyatt and Cici Brown Chair of History.
