Getting Russia Right in the Era of “Fake News”

February 20, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

David Filipov, former Moscow Bureau Chief of The Washington Postand writer for The Boston Globe, will speak at the Bob Graham Center on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora about the U.S. news landscape and where Russia, Putin, and Russia-U.S. Relations currently reside within it.

As former Bureau Chief for the Washington Post and Boston Globe and decades-long reporter living in Russia and engaging with Russians fluently in their native tongue, David Filipov brings rare insight to the issue and will challenge audience members to adopt a more nuanced view of Putin, Russia, and their relations with the U.S., as well as to engage more critically with a news and information sphere that has grown increasingly susceptible to manipulation.

A fully proficient Russian speaker, Filipov previously covered Russia and the former Soviet Union for The Boston Globe from 1994 to 2004. During his tenure at The Globe, Filipov was part of the newsroom team that won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, as well as an Overseas Press Club award for his 1999 coverage of the war in Chechnya.

Co-sponsored by The Bob Graham Center, UF Russian Studies, the University of Florida International Center, the College of Journalism and Communications, UF Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere (Rothman Endowment), and the Departments of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and Political Science.
