Movable Book Project

  • Collaborators: Katie Smith, Jake Goodson, and Xiaoli Ma
  • Participants: The libraries conservation, digitization, and metadata teams
  • Brief Description: The movable book project is a long-term project to support curious makers in their research on movable and pop-up books in our Rare and Baldwin Historic Children’s Book Collection. This is a three-part project to create a fully accessible collection to those interested in paper engineering. The first part is the conservation of these movable and pop-up books back to full working order—including facsimiles and models boxed with the book so people can play with the mechanisms without further damaging the originals. The second part involves the digitization of the books, which includes one page being animated in some form or other (whether through video, animation, or 3D photogrammetry). The third part is creating a pdf of that page/mechanism and making it available to print and make anywhere in the world.
  • Website: All of this is available in our digital library. Go to ufdc.ufl.edu. In the search box, type the word “movables”. It will be easier if you filter by the name “Katie Smith”. What will come up are the pdf files to make the mechanisms. If you click on any of these files you will find an additional link at the top of the page that will take you to the digital version of the book the mechanism came from—including the animation.
