The Religious Language of Flowers in the And Artworks created in the Viceroyalty of Peru primarily depicted religious subjects. Andean artists bridged the gap between their native culture and the imposed Christian religious doctrine, adapting Andean elements and reinterpreting Christian themes within a local framework. In many examples of religious paintings from this period, flowers are one of the most conspicuous elements. Flowers were an important component in the Andean artistic aesthetic, becoming a characteristic of the Cusco School of Painting. Native florae were identified as iconographical elements associated with Andean devotions through their incorporation into religious paintings. This project why flowers were so abundant in religious paintings, their meanings, and their relevance for Indigenous audiences.
