The National Humanities Center Virtual Residencies

The National Humanities Center Virtual Residencies were awarded to Ph.D. students in UF’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students attended two themed residencies: “How to Create Meaningful Online Learning Communities” and “Podcasting the Humanities: Creating Digital Stories for the Public.”

Through the residency on creating online learning experiences, students participated in an online learning environment that modeled best practices for undergraduate teaching. Throughout the program, participants worked in cross-university and interdisciplinary teams to create instructional materials for their teaching portfolio.

In the podcasting residency, students learned how to communicate humanities expertise in the accessible and publicly-responsive format of the podcast. Through the immersive virtual workshop, students focused on storytelling and gaining technical training while working in crossuniversity and interdisciplinary teams to storyboard an idea, create and collect audio content, and edit and publish a broadcast-ready podcast.

The 2020 NHC residency awardees Lauren Cox (Ph.D. candidate, English), Laken Brooks (Ph.D. candidate, English) and Dr. Vickie Machado (Ph.D., Religion) were subsequently invited to participate in the NHC’s virtual conference, “In Our Image: Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities” (April 7-11, 2021).
