Bishop Studies Center Manager, Harn Museum of Art
2013-2014 Library Enhancement Grant
Dr. Eric Segal received a library enhancement grant to support acquisitions for the Bishop Studies Center (BSC) at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art. The BSC under the leadership of Ivy Chen provides visitors to the Harn Museum a number of multimedia and hands-on resources for extended study in art and culture. This grant supports the acquisition of artist monographs, books, and DVDs directly related to current exhibitions, as well as significant scholarly publications selected by museum curators. Visitors to the Harn can spend time in the BSC to learn more about the artists and cultural contexts they encounter in the museum exhibits.
Current and upcoming exhibitions supported by this grant include exhibitions on the mythology of Oceania and Ancient American peoples, Asian manuscript paintings from the 17th through 19th centuries, engravings and woodcuts depicting the history of plants in medicinal treatments, highlights from the Harn’s permanent collection of photography, artistic and cultural connections between the Kongo peoples of Central Africa and African Americans of the United States, and American Impressionism featuring works by Theodore Robinson and Childe Hassam. A list of current exhibitions is available here.
The acquisitions made possible by this library enhancement grant will enrich the experience of visitors to these and other exhibitions. The additional resources acquired by the Bishop Studies Center will provided increased content and context for the exhibitions, supporting the public and scholars alike as they pursue greater appreciation of and critical engagement with the Harn collections.
