Linguistic Landscapes and Language Ideologies in the Occupied Territories (West Bank and East Jerusalem) – Keith Walters

March 13, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Free

Language serves a symbolic function in society as an expression of such concepts as power, gender and identity. Social actors produce and reproduce particular identities, as well as gender and power relations through their language use and language choices. The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures presents this talk as part of the Spring 2020 series “Language, Gender, and Identity in the Arab World.”

Keith Walters is Professor Emeritus of Applied Linguistics at Portland University. Much of his research and volunteer work focuses on language and identity in the Arab world and language issues in educational contexts; he is also co-author of three college-level textbooks. A former Peace Corps volunteer and Fulbrighter, he has taught English to speakers of other languages in Tunisia, Guinea, and the U.S., and trained teachers in these countries as well as Morocco, Egypt, the West Bank, and Vietnam. He is currently co-editing a handbook on Arabic and Identity, to appear with Routledge.

This event is free and open to the public.  Sponsored by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere.
