Imagineering the Museum

March 12, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Dr. Eleni Bozia (UF Classics) will present “Reimagining Authenticity in the Era of 3D Printing.” Living in the era of 3D digitization and printing, hence of recreation and different representations of artifacts, we need to reconsider authenticity and originality. This workshop will consider 3D representations of museum artifacts and other manifestations of reproduction to reevaluate authenticity.  This talk will be held at the HARN Museum of Art.

Participants will then walk to the Florida Museum of Natural History to see Dr. Ken Sassaman (UF Anthropology) present his talk “Flesh to Feathers: The Museumization of Native America.” Putting “flesh” on the “bones” of archaeological or ethnographic museum collections for purposes of public display lays bare the politics of authenticity. Juxtaposing displays of Native America in various natural history museums with those of the National Museum of the American Indian invites discussion of the authorship of authenticity.

Sponsored by the UF Mellon Intersections Group on Imagineering and the Technosphere, Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, and Smathers Libraries.
