Monuments and Contested Memory in Europe – Virtual Panel Discussion
February 18, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
FreeThis month’s session of Conversations on Europe will invite discussion on contested monuments in the US and Europe – some of which have generated lots of public notice, while others may be less familiar. The panel of experts will consider and compare recent controversies over Confederate and Communist statues, colonial monuments, and memorials to WWII and the Holocaust. What is the role of public art in creating a shared history and whose history is being displayed? Lunch provided.
This panel is being hosted live at the University of Pittsburgh; several other universities (including UF) are participating remotely. Panelists are Kirk Savage (University of Pittsburgh); Jennifer Sessions (University of Virginia); Katja Wezel (University of Gottingen).
Sponsored by the Center for European Studies.
